Why Do My Bud's Smell Like Plants?

So I recently cut down two AK's -- got about 230grams pre-dried, hoping for maybe 90grams post dry.. we'll see... but that's not the point.. here's my point..

Why are my buds smelling like plants and not skunk? They have a chemically-planty smell to it, and not that crisp skunky smell... Is it possible I've cut too early? ( Some trics were amber in color, and about 60% orange hairs.. )

And before you respond with a "Well would you look at that!?" -- Yea I know.. I already have looked at it. I am currently looking at it.

All my stuff (5 strains) doesn't smell like it should till I grind it up, then it stinks so good!
I have Hindu Skunk, White Widow, BB Kush, Purple Kush and Afghan.:eyesmoke::eyesmoke::eyesmoke::lol:

Ahh, so it sounds like it totally depends on both strain and phenotype? I guess its good that they are sticky-icky-icky, like duct tape..

I usually don't get that "dank" smell until after I've cured for several weeks.

Proper drying &curing bring out the majority of the taste and smell you're looking for. Give it a little time & it will only get better

My Critical+ stinks to high heaven of citrius and skunk at the moment.. its probably the most pungent smelling plant yet. I have heard others say that curing will bring it back or make to smell the way it should but every harvest I had the smell never leaves pre-cut and cured.

Cure it. I've picked up wet buds and even OG that smelled sweet. Few weeks curing, got that piney skunky OG smell I was looking for

I keep my kush in a "Crown" mason jar from 1930, seems to improve the taste and quality as it ages

idk 60% red hairs seems too early.... my plants are usually pungent as fuck after I cut them down from the great outdoors.

I was thinking the same thing too, but I was looking at the trichomes, and some were starting to look amber, and mostly all were milky opaque... and never minding the red hairs, I thought that its a good idea to cut when trichomes start to turn amber ( if you are looking for a more sativa high ) ... maybe Im wrong..

well rule of thumb the bud is done as far as the plant is concerned when most of the hairs have turned and the calyxes have swelled.

outdoors the trichomes don't amber up as much as they do indoors, so you can have a plant thats completely done barely have any amber trichs, but indoors they start making ambers before they're even finished with the bud (I have a feeling this has to do with the /constant/ 12/12 vs the photoperiod slow rise and slow fall of outdoor.)

so in the future make sure the bud looks done no matter what, then go by trichs after that for further chracteristics preferred in your indoor bud.

and I don't like the general school of thought on finishing bud... I think your strain is waht it is, and you should let it finish to its fullest potential.. if it doesn't have the high or stone you're looking for you should get another strain! harvest it as early or as late, it wont turn an indica into a sativa.

early harvested indicas feel like almost nothing-highs... early harvested sativas are still great for some reason outdoors since they don't get the opprotunity to finish they seem to make up for it by making good cannabinoids that actually get you a good buzz even if the bud isn't finished...

sorry I kinda jumped into a few relative subjects... its all relevent tho.

Damnit! Why is there so much to learn about growing! Why cant I just plant a seed, come back 75 days later and cut the thing down. Life is never easy.

Thanks for the info though poplars! My next grow ( of autoflowers ) I think I will will wait a little longer than this last grow, look at the calyxes more than the trics and hairs. I think Im looking for a more dense 'bud' as opposed to hairs and trics(crystals)... at least that is what Im taking away from what you are saying..

like I said, density as in the calyxes getting larger... the hairs changing, and then trichomes if you really want to. but I say the first 2 are the best indicators.
