Why do people grow their plants so small?

in my first grow i thoght the bigger the better. for my inside grow. but there was just lots of waste, with only one 400hps. plus if there smaller you can keep a better eye on them. i suppose when people are better at growing then , they mite grow bigger plants. and buy more lites.

What if its inside of a box. 21 days after sprouting. its maybe 1ft tall. Couldint you just add some Big Bloom to it during 12/12 and it max your yeild??

DaCDaC
Yes big bloom would help to max your yield. And the amount of time you veg. doesn't matter. It's the height that matters. I usually go for a ft. tall, some like them taller, but a foot is plenty big.

Ok this is true. And to be truthful I have smoked some really nice smaller buds that have been more than great. They've been awesome.
Plus if you have strains that are meant to be grown small, its all good.
I would'nt think its so much of a time question as it is a heighth issue, one thing that needs to be considered is that the plants normally double if not triple in size during flowering, so if it only takes 14 or 21 days to reach a foot tall your looking at a 2 or 3 foot plant by the time your done

Yes. So true. A lot does depend on the lighting for sure. I forgot that I have only used cfl's but had them all over the place and had LOTS of room.
I just cropped and bent mine as to where I wanted them to grow but this would only work with the cfl's. I've never had a hps light before but am considering getting a 600 one. i have been told that this goves off less heat than the 1000 watt MH I was also considering.

I am asking these questions in preparation for my indoor grow so thanks everyone. Its a big help.

size of the plant doesn't matter. age does.

if you want to get the THC% your plant is rated for, you must veg for at least 8 weeks.

if it gets too tall for your space you need to LST or crop your plants.

flowering young plants will have smaller buds and less then par THC.

if you take clones, they are whatever age/maturity the mother was.

Now this is the info I am looking for.
Quote from closet cult boy: 'If you want to get the THC your plant is rated for you must veg for at least 8 weeks."

This information makes perfect sense to me. Clones I understand the age thing being the same, its basically a mutation of the mother but to grow a plant from seed and want to flower only after 3 weeks just seemed WAY too premature. Its like flowering babies.

If the plants get too tall you LSD them? I think this is the same thing I said about cropping them and stressing them out (bending etc)

Thanks Closet dude. I am so on the same page as you.

I force flower pretty young only b/c im not patient. even though it may not reach its max potential in potentcy, its still pretty damn strong.. and I dont have enough space to let them veg for 2 months.. but my plants still get to a pretty decent size.

I would have to disagree with you 100%
Age of the plant has nothing to do with THC content. Not at all. In fact, the few larger buds your plant produces are more than likely going to be of HIGHER quality than a larger plant with many more bud sites, some of which will be shaded and not get good light penetration. (if you are using artificial lighting).

The reason I grow MORE smaller plants under artificial light is simple. Greater yield for the time spent. Quicker finished product.

Think about it. If I take 50 clones, veg them for 7 days, then flower them for 60, and yield 2lbs under 1200watts. I have pulled 2lbs off in 67 days.

Take the same strain 10 clones, veg them for 2 months, then flower them for 60 days and yield 2lbs under 1200watts.

You get the same 2lbs with 10 clones grown big, but you took 120 days to produce it!! You can have the same weight and possibly BETTER quality in HALF the time.

No to mention, you are MUCH more likely to pull 2 lbs from 1200watts with 50 plants than you are with 10. Let's face it, you can make much better use of every watt of light with more plants than you can with 10.

We also end up using much less effort. We take less time, less work to train plants etc to use up all available light and in the end, I only end up chopping up 50 BIG colas instead of thousands of tiny buds.

You can definatley argue the points I have made, but it is simply my 2 cents.

Yeah ive always read that the parts closer to the light secrete the most resin.. thats the reason i never sell my top colas.. cuz they are the best.

All I see are tiny little 'tweebie' buds.

.
Hey Lacy, here was my collection of midgets.
The small one is 9". 5 Bluberry clones that yeilded
over 6 oz.

I don't think it's so much size, but the amount of
light it gets. I can't use the sun so my girls get 600 watts
of hps instead...this was them at day 59 of flower.

I have some purple widow on the way. I plan to net a pound out of my room on just this strain w/ a 600w on a light mover, so just wait

Oh my goodness Jonny boy!!! Now thats IMPRESSIVE!!!:hump:
Gosh! Excuse me for sounding so naive but what are those boxes? I am seriously considering a 600 watt hps light. I have lots of room and lots of people have told me that a 1000 watt MH is too hot.

Thats incredible! I am gonna keep track of your posts.
I hope you don't mind being rolitup stalked!

Very cool grow. Now that is worht considering.
So basically I have to grow a good strain, make it into a mother plant and clone them. i even have these boxes. oh the boxes!!!!!

Hey i know what the boxes are now, They're cloning boxes and I already have some. YES!!!!!!!!!:fire:

You just explained in detail what Jonny is doing.
I always thought that clones were less resistant than growing from seeds but I suppose like anything it depends on the grower because clearly jonny's colas look more than fine.
I'm not growing to sell and already have MORE THAN ENOUGH bud to last a long time but this hobby just drives me. I can't absorb enough info to sustain my interest and this is very exciting.

I still have to grow from seeds to pick out the males and my best strains and go from there.

thanks so much for your imput lump:mrgreen:much appreciated
