What about storing seeds ?

Friends and I are debating over the best way to store seeds for long term. He came across some good seeds but can't grow for a while... like maybe over a year away. How would one do this properly ? Any ideas please would be greatly appreciated. :weed:

I have mine in med containers in a box. Have ones from 5 years ago that still pop fine.

the best way to store seeds long term is cryogenic however if you dont have a cryogenic storage unit the next best thing is sealed in glass test tubes. the method i use can keep seed viable from 5 to 20 years (or longer) this is acheved by removing oxygen and moisture from the tubes.
what you need is...

glass test tubes
rubber stoppers
wax or silicon calking
silica gel beads
cotton balls
vinegar
baking-soda
work area such as a large storage tub or deep sink
towels
paper and pen

first prepare you work area, your area has to be able to hold CO2 which is heavier than oxygen so a deep sink or storage tub works well (if you don't own a glove box). you can make CO2 by mixing baking soda in vinegar in tall cups or jars be sure not to mix to much(to avoid overflow). make sure the area is a dry as possible. lining the workspace with a towel can help achieve this. keep all of you needed materials close by as you want to complete all steps as quickly as possible while the CO2 is still present as it will dissipate over time in a open environment.

next take the paper and cut it into one inch by 2 inch peaces and then wright the name of the seeds and the date on them.

next use the pen to curl the paper into a radius about the same as the inside of the test tube and insert it label out into the bottom of the tube label facing out.

next take the silica gel beads and add about 2 inches at the bottom of the tube making sure you inserted label remains readable then pack a few cotton balls inside to hold them in place

next add your seed

next cork your test tubes with the stoppers and cover the tops with wax or silicon calking

store the test tubes in cool dark place. if you want to go one step farther store them inside a mason jar filled with more silica gel beads

good luck

removing the moisture will kill the seed...
you want it sealed with 60% humidity at about 60°..or the freezer, no it won't somehow mess them up being thawed.

so drop the silica, oxidation isn't a huge factor and not necessary..have seeds many years old still germ beautifully...

Damn I didn't know storing seeds were that serious, I just leave mine in a rubbermaid with all the nutrients and accessories I use for growing.
The seeds tend to be fine, I grow them 1-2 years later. Always stock up on seeds with promotions, but I never grow enough to get rid of them all.

I Put them in a pill bottle and store them in the wine fridge with the red wine.. Not as cold as a regular fridge and works great...

Stupid question, but here goes... How would I have any idea of the humidity percentage ?:???:

I've kept mine in the containers they come in
then place those litlle containers in a med container . Or I have others in a Ziploc bag in a med container. Then all the med containers are wrapped in grocery bags and kept in a frost free fridge. My current outdoor is from seeds I made years ago.

Mason jar in a military surplus ammo can stored away from heat. Super air tight and the ammo can keeps any moisture out.
Have you every done this yourself or friend, that you have seen the results. What's been the longest storage time that you've grown from ?:-?

cannabis seeds are orthodox and like any orthodox seeds can be desiccated down to moisture contents of 4-7% and even ultra-desiccated down to contents of 1-3% without harming the seeds.

what's an orthodox seed?
I know many don't do well under 20% humidity..
like with decreasing humidity, longevity is improved once you reach the upper critical moisture content. at this level respiration is allowed to occur and the seed actually repairs damage it would receive.. at those extremely dry conditions the seed will likely die from the rapid water absorption. they first must be exposed to humid air...

which you could have been doing all along

nice sources btw lol

I keep mine in a pill container in da basement, took at least a year before they started to gem in good numbers. From fresh picked I guess. From my experience. Still learning.
