There is some irony in what you said. You imply voting is looking out for a persons self interest. It can be, but isn't necessarily.If people are too lazy to look out for their own self interest, then they get what they deserve. Shouldn't have to give out prizes.
I think making election day a national holiday would have the opposite effect of what you are going for. For the most part, only people with shitty jobs work on national holidays.
Voting for a choice of two assholes, neither of which express your wishes is not looking out for your self interests. It is wishful thinking and will not bring you what you want.
If people were allowed to look out for their self interests, non participation would be an option.
Looking out for your self interests can only happen for everyone if nonparticipation and non inclusion in the aftermath is an option for those that want it. Otherwise, those people who wish not to be included are unable to look out for their self interest..
Self interest = individual. Democracy = collective will or a default to a "lesser evil" by people that have been duped
