Do you realize how stupid you sound ? Makes one wonder do you even know what would determine if one was conservative or progressive. Everyone is not going to agree on everything. I myself can be conservative , progressive , and or liberal. Depends on wtf you are asking me.
Smogdog doesn't believe in Medicare for all. Not progressive. He doesn't believe in free college. Not progressive. He doesn't believe in ending foreign wars. Not progressive. He thinks Nancy Pelosi's agenda is on track. Not progressive.

This isn't as hard as you're trying to make it.

I don't believe in free college for all either. Have some type of merit in order to attend for free, also have a way in which you can give back.

Funny, that's how it used to work. No one said different.

Giving back?! Whatever happened to investing in our citizens?

Or do you believe in the 'meritocracy' of aristocracy?

In my family we have a scholarship program. you must have at least a 3.0 in high school to receive the monies ( along with other criteria ). When you complete and get that degree, we ask that you give something back. 3.0 to 10 percent of your monthly check for 4 years. You can also just give as a family member. That way the scholarship program will continue for years to come. Every other family reunion we cast our vote for 5 committee chairs that will decide who gets what. so far for the last 12 years it has worked wonderfully.

I believe that Bernie's plan is a nonstarter.

People DO support health care for all but whatever replaces our current horrible system has to be something people want rather than are forced into. Medicare actually is a good deal. Enacting a voluntary buy-in option is the more sure bet.

If there is soooo much cost savings for everybody under Bernie's plan, why does it ban insurance companies from competing with it? Why are people FORCED into his plan?

Should there be an academic requirement to qualify for free college tuition?

I have no problems with helping our future, but our future must show they are deserving and willing to put in the work. I have a hard time giving someone monies for fucking off
I got a lot of help going through college and I've never worked harder for longer for less immediate reward in my life. I've made contributions back, in taxes and contributions to education support organizations but also helped push out some tech that everybody uses. Tech that kept the US competitive and growing. Education is a great investment. College shouldn't be a free ride for people who aren't doing the work but for those that do, their job should be to learn and not figure out how to make ends meet.

I went and no one helped me :( I went in to debt with student loans, worked construction in summers, worked part time while attending and made ends meet .... just. I’m not sure I’m for free education for all, but sure would have been nice when my to kids went to university though :(. It’s not the same world and I’m not sure the opertunities I had are still here like a lucrative summer job that helped finance my schooling...and yes I also sold pot, come to think, I was actually doing quite well lol.

Median personal income in the US is $31,000 per year. A single person on that salary raising two kids cannot possibly think of helping their kid through college. Median household income is $56,000. That is the point at which half make more and half make LESS. I don't know how you see it but as I see it, if we want to make a fair society where everybody has the chance at achieving their potential, I think we need to get over the myth that educating ones kids is solely a personal responsibility. For those few who managed to overcome huge obstacles and paid their own way, good for them but it's not a solution going forward where more and more, society needs higher level skills than before. We need to get over these myths. Students should be worried about learning as much as possible and not how to make ends meet. I'm not advocating a posh lifestyle but healthcare, housing, enough to eat and a rigorous education is a good investment for kids willing to work hard at learning.

Which is what we have here via loans and grants but they are based on family income and student abilities, as I said times are different then when I attended. My kids worked when they could re summers and weekends and their mom and I helped as much as we could. Free education for all would be nice but the cost IMO would be overwhelming. To say free education for all with out seeing the actual details is a non starter for me.
