They also said the corps always tried to return some of the money it was allocated. I don't know if that is true we had no way to verify anything we were told. No radio, no tv, no news, no people, no dancing girls, no civilians no villages no nothing up near the dmz where vandegrift combat base was located.
Its nice of you to be so concerned about my job training. Don't worry i wasn't a hero or anything. By the time we were shot at we were so tired, hot , miserable and so pissed we had no fear of god or man. Not brave just mad as hell at the world and our own situation. You can not believe how your own rage can be turned into a weapon. Its good for combat but lead complications can ruin your day. I never was wounded despite having a NVA grenade go off about two feet from me and two others in my squad. Our grenades killed anyone within 5 yards and would wound within 15 yards. so the three of us were standing in about a two foot deep hole we dug in some miserable rocks. It was dark and we had been tossing grenades and done some shooting from the little hill we were on when suddenly a grenade looking like an old german potato masher landed right in front of the three of us and we expected to have our balls blown off at the minimum. But evidently The enemies grenade blew apart in big chunks and they all missed us. No shrapnel hit us at all. lucky lucky, If one of our grenades had been used there would have been three more killed in action. Some of you would have appreciated that.
My government did manage to spray me with a weed defoliant called agent orange before I got out of the country but I can't bitch considering what many 19 year old men had happen to them.
So now I have given you much you can hit me with. I will start you off "gee its too bad the NVA had such poor quality control on their hand grenades. I hate sloppy work. "

Easy to say now. If you were 18 in 1968 would you be saying the same thing. I don't think so. you don't have any idea of what it was to live in this country in 1968. You didn't live here and you were probably not even born yet. So don't tell other people how they felt about their country 50 years ago. you weren't there. When I speak its from my perspective which saw and heard the news of the time. There was a huge fear of communism at the time and people talked about countries falling like dominoes to the communists. That is why many of us enlisted. We were kids and wanted to do something.
