I’m not sure I agree. The structure of plant is such that it already seems to have decent airflow between the branches. With an outdoor plant, the lower buds will still get plenty of sun — unlike a light hanging overhead. And those fan leaves will fuel growth better than the sugar leaves. My advice would be to leave it as is.
Well, today there is plenty of strong wind , unlike most other days. I'll share with you what it has been fed. To start, the soil is chicken manure and old coffee grounds. The base was only a weed mat, yes the roots went right through it. The yard soil is clay, so hard and full of rocks the only thing I ever saw sprout out from the ground was gophers. Now we have some wild crab grass, no doubt from the watering. Holding it down is some weed whacker string. Yes, let it grow wild and post an update in aweek or two. Clay gets a bad reputation — it’s actually quite rich in nutrients. The problem is they’re bound so tight together that they’re not “bio-available” to the plant. But if you break it up with organic materials (next time) that will make the nutrients easier to uptake. Also, it retains water well and reduces the need for constant irrigation. Yay for clay! (Yes, I cringed even as I wrote it.)
Thanks for the advice Cracken. Any relation to "Jack Cracken "? Also, when you say lower buds, do you mean lower on the pole or lower on the branch?

no relation. I like Kracken rum but the name was taken.
As for the clearing, I mean the larger fan leaves and all the fluff buds that will never amount to more then a few hairs the energy the plant saves will be redirected to the larger bud sites and give you a better yield. in addition better airflow thru the plant allows better CO2 uptake and less chance of bud rot. my big girl is stripped to over 4' from the ground and has over 4' of but sites at the top with no fluff. if I see anything that is just worthless I cut it off. too many hours have wasted in the past trying to trim a bud that ends up being crumbs in the bottom of the bud jar. the fence in the pic is just shy of 6' high.

I tend to agree with you regarding the fluffy little air buds that form on lower inner branches — fuck ‘em. However, I am reluctant to remove fan leaves that seem to support the main colas. What’s your thinking on that?

any thing above the fluff line i keep until the last two weeks of budding, then i strip the fans to allow more light to get to the lower buds that need the uvb to get nice crystal formation. but some strains need more trimming then others. my hash plant was looking like a hedge until i stripped about 30% off her and then the buds started to fill out nicely because the sun and fresh air could get in there. remember if the leaf is not getting sun and air it is only using energy to stay alive. i have done comparisons of plants and in the end had a bigger useable yield from my trimmed plant. also the bigger leaves catch more air and water so on windy or rainy days they cause more weight stress on the branches. but this is only my opinion, I am not a pro so the best thing to do is make a comparison for yourself and then go with what you feel suits you best.

I don’t disagree with your general line of thinking but I am just reluctant to part with those huge fan leaves that seem to support the colas above them with solar power. However, as soon as my early fan leaves start getting shaded out, etc., I remove them as well. I think I approach the issue very similarly tho.

If you haven't done it yet, get some Monterey Insect Garden Spray with Spinosad, and spray every inch of that plant. Especially in San Diego. Nice plant.
