yes there’s such thing as weak seeds. Why paper towel them though? They could be simply damaging the tap root.

The most common cause of damping off of seedlings is bacterial infection from handling. There are also weak genetics. Start them in the medium you plan for them to spend their seedlings days in. See if that works.

Good luck

i guess because I have forever and had no problem. these seeds never make it off the paper towles, the split and quit?? a couple (out of 16) got a baby tap root but that was it. how do you germ? straight into soil?

When you looked at them last was there any weird smells coming off them? Like the smell of a rotting Apple? Any patches of discolouration, back or Red?

Check if seed is all a white meal looking substance inside. Got some seeds from a breeder like that which they replaced and said they had a seed fungus problem in one line.
I have also had seeds, mostly older seeds, that cracked and put out a small root and then just stopped and finally just rotted.

Rapid rooters or straight to soil is all I do. Generally 100% germination rate.

Gently sanitizing the water you use for seeds or clones is always a good idea.

You can use a bit of peroxide or aspirin. Aspirin is basically the active ingredient in cloning gel for instance. Salyacylic acid or something.

I have noticed a little dryness helps young plants get stronger.

Germination rates, as well as inconsistent or unpredictable plants are why I clone 90% of the time.
I generally keep 1-2 out of ten seeds as mothers.
Once you get your genetics ironed out, you will KNOW what the plant is basically gonna do. Then you can cater to your specific equipment and get way better yields, and no wasted space in your rooms.

Anyway, back on subject.
Things like spray bottles or humidity domes need to get a sniff check every day. If it smells like creek mud or wet towels, it needs aspirin or peroxide in the next use.

I used to just put in dirt but i've discovered you can usually select the best moms just by the way the seeds crack and roots size versus the others. You put 10 seeds in a paper towel and the next day the ones that crack and are the biggest root will be the most monster plant out of the bunch. Then I just clone the shit out of that one give to everyone on new stuff. This is also just based on experiences not some college science.
