The ban was condemned by the EU and UN.

Following the suspensions, bodies such as the EU and the UN, as well as governments and journalists, condemned the move.

"Media freedom is not a toy," the UN's under secretary general Melissa Fleming said. "A free press is the cornerstone of democratic societies and a key tool in the fight against harmful disinformation."
EU commissioner Vera Jourova had threatened Twitter with sanctions under Europe's new Digital Services Act which she said requires "the respect of media freedom and fundament rights".

Perhaps the UN or some other international body is best suited to regulating social media, these are international companies with a footprint in many countries, twitter, Facebook and the Chinese Tic Toc being some recent examples. No first amendment worries for those who just want to operate inside the USA, or China for that matter. A large majority of international support for this should not be hard to get for something like this, these companies operate what are essentially newspapers inside their borders, these countries would include Canada and most of the EU among others. It would make it easier for the social media companies too, a uniform set of laws and regulations that applied internationally, like the uniform US business code between states.

That merely kicks the basic problem (who watches the watchmen?) up a level.

Spreads it out too and we watch each other. It is an international problem caused by international corporations who need to be regulated internationally. Some jurisdictions in effect control the market, like California banning two stroke engines and other environmental laws that change corporate behavior and products nationally because of their market share. Likewise with EU regulations and especially if the UK rejoins the EU, affecting social media regulation, Canada and other English speaking countries could pass similar laws in harmony with them, have a treaty etc. Facebook, Twitter and others would have to comply. Fuck the 1st! and fuck the conservative SCOTUS.

Imo the First Amendment does not exist in a vacuum, and we have Scotus jurisprudence backing my belief. So don’t fuck it; remember that it has limits and perspective. The ones to fuck (with someone else’s dick) are originalists and other worshippers of bare text.

Others have freedom of speech with out a straight jacket! It is spelled out in other international documents like the UN charter. If there are limitations in US law, there are no such limitations in the international arena, where these corporations seek to operate, America first and then the world is their motto. Big social media companies operate globally, no matter where they base themselves. Canada could sign a treaty with the EU or simply pass laws in harmony with theirs, as could all the other English speaking countries outside the USA, and there are well over 100 million or more people, just counting the Anglo countries.

Freedom of speech is a wonderful concept but as it's a given that it does not apply to say someone running through a packed theatre screaming fire where no fire exists does that also not apply to politicians and others who are practically doing the same by promoting lies and conspiracy theories that inflame public reaction?

The massive penalties just given Alex Jones for his outright lies about Sandy Hook should be levelled against all the others, tRump included, that have caused suffering via their warped verbal diatribes.

Just my 2¢

If not fined, sanctioned by a judge as a "Public liar" an official designation that must appear whenever his video is shown on FCC regulated TV! Imagine Tucker with that on the bottom of the screen as he's bullshitting "Untrusted source, known public liar!"

The idea of shouting fire in a crowded theater isn't protected by the 1A, because the speech is likely to incite imminent lawless action (such as a riot), which is exactly why Trump and his supporters who helped to incite Jan 6th are not protected by the 1A.

l’étwat: c’est moi.

He pissed off a lot of journalists, these guys create the news and might continue to gather it on Twitter, but will publish it elsewhere when a viable alternative becomes available and then on twitter with a delay and a link to the new site for the latest. Many are looking and have expressed their desire for a viable alternative for the online niche, and where there is this kind of problem, there is also opportunity in Elon's folly.

Isn't that exactly what Twitter was doing with tRump not long before he got banned?

It should apply across the board for anyone who holds public influence over what is stated as fact in any media. If it's found to be false then sanctions like a time-out from that media should be able to be imposed.

Some dead air would be nice for a change.

The main point is there are plenty of creative ways to combat bullshit in the media that doesn't necessarily involve violating the 1st amendment. For example, say the democrats win next year and make new laws empowering the FCC while increasing it's scope of operation. Now let's say Tucker bullshitted on his show and spun a wildly false and dangerous narrative and started asking "questions", say about a new covid vaccine that wipes it out and is approved by science etc. Next day Tuck gets a summons to appear before an FCC panel for a public hearing on CSPAN and is put under oath and asked to repeat his script. We want tuck to get his message out and want to help him by giving him sort of a seal of integrity. If he refuses to repeat under oath what he said to the public on air then there is an issue. If he refuses to appear or cooperate his network could lose its license or be suspended until he does! We don't want to suppress Tuck's free speech, just repeat it under oath for free broadcast and make sure he and his script writer got their facts straight. We are the government and we are here to help you Tuck!

I'm surprised he hasn't banned her too. Elon's ego has been taking a pounding lately and he might be getting pulled back to earth by the force of gravity. His is hubris is entertaining to watch and not nearly as deadly as Putin's, or as dangerous as Trump's. He is burning money in the bonfire of the vanities and we are delighted by the heat and light, as his cash goes up in smoke along with his carefully cultivated public image, the genius is a jenius.

You gotta respect that he takes polls about his decisions and lets the people have a say. He let most of them back but not all. And Freedom of Speech is protected for a reason.

The price of celebrity is your life becomes an open book and Elon's is not looking good. It is good he reinstated the journalists and the poll is not to be trusted, but Elon used it to climb down from a stupid call. He needs more people around him who will tell to fuck off, and look him in the eye and call him an asshole when required. Even Caesars favorite slave spoke frankly and honesty to him and was rewarded with freedom in Caesar's will. When that can't happen these kinds of people are in trouble, Elon was led by his ego into a 44 billion dollar mistake and paid 4 times what Twitter was worth. Since then its been a fucking fiasco as Elon squeals and squirms, he could lead it into bankruptcy through mismanagement and to get out from under billions in debt Trump style.
