They are spreading the Russians thinner and threatening the entrance to Crimea, if the Ukrainians make it to the sea of Azov, then those Russians in the southwest of Ukraine will be cut off, including those at the nuclear power plant. With no escape they are less likely to blow it up or cause a meltdown and the closer the troops stationed there are pinned to the place and surrounded the better.

A longer war keeps Russia under sanctions and destroys their vast hoard of Soviet equipment, it ends the war when it ends and provides the best long-term security for Ukraine and Europe. Joe controlled the throttle and over a year ago Blinken and Astin said the point was to destroy the Russian military at a news conference, but they only said it once after Joe told them to STFU! Joe can end this war quickly if he wanted too, he just has to give them the right model of ATACMS missile and they would target Russian rail bridges inside Russia leading into Ukraine and the Kerch bridge, the Russians would be fucked in Ukraine in a hurry.
America planned on fighting the Russians in Europe for a long time and knows all about their absolute dependency on the rails, they could never invade western Europe because the rail gauge is smaller than the Russian one. I'm sure someone in the pentagon thought about bringing down Russian rail bridges long ago, America has multiple means of doing this.

This is horrific, even the Ukrainians are starting to feel sorry for the poor bastards. It's a lot of dead sons, brothers, husbands and fathers for no gains or really no reason. WTF are these guys dying for anyway.

Looks like Ukraine could be opening up another front south of Kherson and it will draw Russian units away from the breakthrough in the south, burning fuel to get there. It depends on how much and what Ukraine can get across the Dnieper River and if ATACMS can cut the bridges leading to Crimea from southern Ukraine. This attack threatens Russian supply lines to the east through Crimea and the Russians have little choice but to respond to such an attack in force. Their trouble is they are short of forces in the area and short of forces in general and those they do have are being wasted on stupid attacks that failed multiple times. The Russians appear to be taking far more casualties even though it is a Ukrainian offensive.

If this is the general attitude of the government of Israel, then Russia is fucked and it's a good day for Ukraine, things are gonna change in the middle east. This terrorist attack and Russia's vastly weakened military and diplomatic power might cause some change in Syria and Lebanon. For now, it's one demon at a time, deal with Hamas and the hostages locally, the other stuff comes after. If Joe has a plan to destroy the Russian military using Ukraine, Israel is now onboard.

It depends on how you measure the land campaign's success, territory gained or the destruction of Russian forces and equipment, versus the cost to Ukraine. By the metric of dead Russians and destroyed equipment Ukraine is doing very well, because of idiotic Russian command, poor equipment untrained troops and criminal tactics.
