Neither, really ... the fact that we naturally work best in tight groups of 10-12 (the hunting band up to the military/sports squad, the family) and communities of about 200 (the village, the hobbyists' club). It's in our natures.

But what about the whole deforestation thing? That's another resource that's being used up rather quickly. I know in my county, there's a lot of trees being cut down for wood chips and paper pulp. My step-dad runs a skidder and drives truck for the company that does it. It takes a long time for trees to regrow, and a lot of these companies aren't replanting. What about that? Trees are an essential part of filtering carbon dioxide and replenishing oxygen levels, right?

My hypothesis is that Mother Earth will not let things go past the point of no return. A few more Hurricane seasons and a couple of earthquakes throw in a volcano for show and us pests are knocked back into very harmless numbers.

Deforestation is pretty scary. However, wood is becoming expensive. It's no longer the dirt-cheap universal feedstock that it once was.
In the USA and Canada, almost all pulpwood comes from trees grown for that purpose. i was shocked when i went a-tourin' through Oregon. Much of the coastal region has been clearcut and replanted in ugly monocultures of trash pine.
Trees are a good way to clear carbon from the air. but the marine plankton cycle has'em beat for sheer tonnage of action.
So while i agree that we're doing harm to the ecosphere, I am not at all convinced that we're on the edge of a cliff of doom.

Imo the future lies in a combination of reducing our footprint (which will happen as a natural consequence of the nasty wars that'll come upon us when the coastlines drown and the breadbasket regions get invaded by dunes) and improving our energy and resource cycles. But from this perspective, I can't tell you what the shape of that future would be. Even Jules Verne didn't anticipate the airliner or the minivan. cn
