As long as the plant is somewhat dry I never have issue with fabric or tearing roots, but i also domt transplant 5 times like some do. Solo cup -> 1 gallon -> 5 gallon

As long as you have drainage holes and only water when the top inch is dry you won't have any issues

Dampened paper towels in a plastic bag in a dark warm spot like a cabinet will work very well. If they arent cracked keep trying
