Koco,
How big are your pots and what media? Makes a difference in that coco, for example, needs runoff to avoid nutrient build-up.
You want more then just a bare bones, keep alive system. Can't move the plants to Granny's place? That would be perfect...

I think the word buffering confuses things somewhat...due to it being used mostly with ph issues. But my understanding is the main purpose is to fill the cation exchange sites with Ca++ and Mg++ so that the coco doesn't tie up either of those from your nutes. My technique is pretty standard...
Hey Mtf,
I strain mine also. Wondering what sort of strainer. I've been using a kitchen collander but would be nice to have something bigger. Any interesting ideas to share.
JD
Yes it is.
I reuse coco...and reused coco must be rinsed and buffered. So I have everything all set up to rinse and buffer. Mild enough weather here to do it outside.
So I rinse and buffer so all my plants have similarly treated coco for consistency.
Cheers,
JD
Like you, I've been growing for a long time and remember when coco was first gaining popularity. Loads of dead seedlings and failed grows. But yes...any decent coco should be rinsed and buffered and usually should say so on the bag.
Totally agree about our newb brethren...nothing surprises...
Hi Guys,
Just had some home-grown G13Widow finish curing and damn...it's good. Different then plain Widow in that it actually has some flavor to the smoke. I'm not real good at this...just a sec (taking hit)....smooth and Widowy with floral overtones...lol
JD
Mostly true xtsho...but guys will sometime buy cheapo pet store coco bricks that were never meant for growing. Sure, it can be used...once you rinse and buffer it. I don't know where his coco came from.
JD
tell us about your drying space...heat, temp, humidity air exchange. Mostly you will have to watch buds. I had some airy sativa buds that dried in half the time as more compact buds. Too many variables to give you a firm answer.
JD
Nwecs,
Seriously...you should consider soil. If you cannot rinse your coco...how on earth can you possibly run a drain-to-waste system. Or were you going to skip runoff?
JD
Hi guys,
RH makes a big difference too, socirculation of air can be a little more aggressive if RH is high. I live on the coast with really high RH and have to run a dehuey just to get buds to dry at all. I use a small desktop fan on low and put it a ways away so plants get blown on...but...
Me too...no dome for seedlings. It's a clone thing mostly. What's a common cause for seedling death? Damping off which is a fungal infection of the stem. Fungi love humidity...enough said.
JD
Well I assumed that the DI filter you referred to was for the RO to make deionized water...they will do that. You tell me...why are you so dedicated to add a DI filter...and what will it do for you?
I just meant forget the DI filter and just buy a $50 unit. Seems to me you're overthinking...
Nizza,
The actual components on generic cheapo RU units ...like you would find on Amazon and eBay, are all pretty standardized. For your needs...a $50 unit would serve you a long time. Just go buy a gal of deionized water.
Chloramine and chlorine will damage the RO membrane...so all RO units...
Hey G420,
LEDs, I understand, have no infrared and so do not cause stoma opening (for gas exchange). Something that needs to be compensated for. I use cmh with my led so no problem.
Others with only LED have to heat up grow space, which will also open stomas. 80f is good. You're low 70s...
What did you mean here...top off? Sorry if that's stupidly obvious.
Nice summary. I grow in coco and tend to read stuff about it when I come across it. Never to late to learn. Read once...stretching my memory,...may have been the AN newsletter. That perlite just occupies space...holds no...
Grapenut,
Drying is supercritical. Too slow, you get rot. Too fast...harsh smoke.
The paper bag thing is to slow drying and use two bags if they're drying too fast. 50ish RH works pretty good for me.
