For this we'd be in jail.

If it was dark what was he doing out there? Yes, common sense would tell you to wear orange, but where does it say that the woods is for hunters only? Plus, 10 more minutes and hunting season was going over and for him it was, it was dark out.

All he cared about was one last chance at a deer. He knew the rules and I bet it wasn't 10 more minutes I bet he was 5 minutes after hunting season closed.
yeah, thought of that too, also wondered, what the fuck was she doing "taking a walk with her dogs" in an Designated hunting area.

lucky woman though, getting only her hip shattered.

still think the man should get a spanking for this, way too eager on the trigger.

Where I live you are allowed to hunt big game from 30 mins before sunrise to 30 mins after sunset. But being a trooper that man ought to be held to a higher standard for verifying his target. I have hunted a LOT in my life and I don't see how in the hell you could mistake ANY dog's tail for a deer. They don't move in the same way, don't look alike, and hell deer tails are a lot higher off the ground. The guy needs his ass beat, you ALWAYS make sure of your target before you pull the trigger. That's why around where I live you always hear stories about bowhunters getting popped with .22s by some young damn squirrel hunter that doesn't know for sure what they are shooting at.

always make sure what you are shooting at before pulling the trigger. just seeing a tail is not enough reson to shoot.

on another note:

if your in the woods and its starting to get dark, you can see for quite awhile because your eyes are adjusted and your in the woods. but your eyes can play tricks on you.

if your in your house and its starting to get dark and you look towards the woods, it will appear to look much darker than if you were in the woods at that ame time.

Twelve minutes ago would have made it 7:30 pm, give them another 2 hours just because and it's 5:30 pm. Ok, you east coast hunters what time is sunset? If I figure this right he was hunting around dusk and in my state that is illegal. I think.
Sunset is usually around 5..so yes, I do believe it could've been pretty close to being dark.

2 other troopah's are in trouble out there. One for domestic assault and running from the cops while intoxicated, and another was caught getting some knob from a hooker and tried to outrun the cops. They teach you in the mandatory hunters safety course to know your target 100% before pulling the trigger. He was probably sighting her up and the muzzle loader went off unintentionally and now he's in deep.

that also means, if she had waited 10 more minutes , she would have been safer.

("ok its dark and people outside are shooting at anything that moves (drunk hunters..) so im gonna take a stroll in the area where they are shooting, im not going to wear orange, cause im lucky and im taking the dogs")

but yes, that hunter should have been thinking "better be careful, there are strolling idiots around and they might not be wearing orange"

I agree she should have exercised more common sense. What's that old saying? Something about being 'Dead Right'.

I used to teach hunter's safety. The most important thing in hunting is making sure you have a clear target before pulling the trigger. The trooper was a dumb ass. Plain and simple.

yes, ultimately it is the hunters fault.

he was the one with the gun and the one that should have excercised caution most of all..

makes you wonder why there isnt a minimum iq on the guns. 100 at least lol.

I think we need a mandatory hunter's safety course before a hunter's license can be purchased. We have to take a drivers test before we can get a drivers license. Why not for hunting?

Sniffs, of gun control to me. I agree something should be done but not a loss of rights.

and if you saw an obviously mentally handicapped man, you would just hand him a gun?

how about if he was just plain stupid, would you hand him a gun, knowing he went among children with it? ;)
