I had gnats when I started growing and used the 1/2 inch of sand on top of the soil method. It worked I have been gnat free every since.
I had a houseplant and did have to put sand over its soil as well though, those buggers will cover ground to find a new plant!

DE, drying out the soil until the plants are wilted, and spraying everything did absolutely nothing and all of the plants are dying. There are still fungus gnats and spider mites everywhere. Whole crop is going to hell.

The first thing to do with spider mites is wash them off. Get on the underside of the leaf. If you can take it outside use a garden hose (on low) and wash them off from the underside and top. If you can't do that use a pump garden sprayer like you would use to spray fertilizer, etc., you will get more pressure than using a trigger pump sprayer.; You can put a couple of drop of dish soap in the sprayer. This sticks to the bug and suffocates them. Neam(sp) Oil is great also. Bt works on many bug issues. I always start with the less invasive and move up little by little. So I start with the water only. But remember that organic changes happen slow. You may just slow them down enough to complete this harvest and then scour the room for the next go round. Mites are shit they suck the juice out of your babies. Make them look like they got no water so you over water and then the gnats irritate the shit out of you.

I sprayed the underside of the leaves until the plants were dripping, and it didn't seem to bother them. I can't spray anymore at this point, some of the girls are over 55 days.

neem oil is more preventative, lots of people suggest covering the top in some way but i always had them coming out the bottom of the pots too, using the dunks as a powder on top is how you stop them in the soil, once they are dead the spray and sticky traps should take care of the adults. I had a real bad problem recently, drying out, need oil, apple cider, none of it worked, there was more and more everyday, i felt like you do, but once i crushed up the dunks, sprayed with organicide, and put up the cheap $2 sticky traps they were gone in a few days, i put the traps down low by the plants, mine were coverd after 2 days, hopefully some of that will help.

Also, with your vinegar trap, you need to stretch some plastic wrap over the top and poke a hole in the middle about 2-3 times the size of the gnats. Little fuckers get inside and drown bouncing around looking for the way out.

There are at least 30/day in the apple cider...I put a carnivorous plant in there and it was covered in 15 minutes...when this grow is over I'm scrubbing the tent down.

i had the same problem. I use garlic powder they dont like it. you can also use it to rase your ph levels...

If you stick with routine, I promise positive results! This shit works great on Knats, mealy bugs, Aphids, you name it, it kills!!!!!

let your soil dry out between watering. the larvae need moist soil to survive. i often let my plants wilt between watering. my gnat problems has been gone for years now.
mmm this or theres this microscopic glass/ sandy stuff somebody else on here probly knows what im talkin about, it literally cuts the bastards up as the crawl around, drying out is very important too

I've got some stuff called Bang on the way, it's supposed to get rid of mites and I can use it up to 3 days before harvest...hope it works.

i dont like using chemicals near my plants at all. I would have gone with sticking my pitcher plant and venus fly trap in my setup grab and apple cider dish (which i have found not to work well, wine left out to vinigarize works better IME i think it has to do with the color). Then look around your house and grab as many spiders and you can catch from your house and throw them in there. They will decimate the gnats in a week, then you have to remove the majority of the spiders and sweep the cob webs out. leave just a couple in case them suckers try and return. This has worked for me a few times. One time a FOAF had a real big gnat problem and this worked.. cleaned it up in a week or so.
Neem oil products are also good options. For mites, grab you some ladybugs! but in an indoor setup do not put the whole package in there, and if you use them outside spray a little decarbonized soda (coke, pepsi, whatever your poison is) on their wings. Sounds cruel but this disables them flying for a day or two so they will therefor colonize your garden area where you want them to stay and then attack the population your are trying to kill. If you do not do this, most will simply fly away and your money is wasted.
