So what exactly kills mold under sunlight? It's been long known that mold doesn't grow directly under the sunlight, they always look for a shade. And UVC is filtered by the ozone, so it's mostly UVA and UVB. Could it be the combination of IR/UVA/UVB together? Or a specific intensity and wavelength such as 280nm?
its the uvb, the part that is close to uvc. Theres a difference in killing mold and to prevent; UV tends to make plants a bit stronger and mess with molds and bugs so you have less issues but i dont really think it would clear out an already infected tent with UV only.

Yes i meant for prevention, not for an ongoing infestation. I'm trying to collect as much info about it, i want to do everything possible to prevent it because i'm very allergic to mold. I'll add UVB later in flower just in case. Hell, even if someone told me that chanting a mantra to my plants would prevent mold i would do it lol!

The mechanism of UV sterilization is that it knocks out the bridges between strands of DNA leading to its degradation, but the problem is that plant DNA will also suffer from this. In addition, plants will unwittingly provide mold with a lot of shelters in dark places.
Fortunately, other things being equal, the likelihood of mold (like any other infection) is dependent on the number of spores. All living organisms fight pathogens and only when there are enough of them can they overcome the defense.
You can minimize the number of spores by placing a small 253nm germicidal lamp at the air inlet of the grow box to sterilize the incoming air.
There are also microbiological preparations to combat mold.

Outdoor plants can still get mold. Instead of trying to rely on UV you would be better off trying to reduce humidity and increasing airflow around your plants to prevent mold starting in the first place.

We've had a record heatwave this year, and so I've already lost a couple of plants to the heat. It's not a good time to grow indoors without aircon, even under LED, and my usual grow space is in the roof so it gets super hot up there.
LOL @SenseiPrawn I missed have missed the lesson about heat and your scaly mates LEDs. Its been pretty hot on this side of the equator too, so yeah ok I have dropped the EC to 2.3, 2 weeks since flip - 5 to go, my next upgrade will be some Mars UFOs

Yes, selective Pruning/"thinning" (perennials), training, defoliation for mold prevention. Outdoors you're at the mercy of mother nature. I still have to dump fungicides/pesticides during moisture spells unfortunately. Fungal leads to pest prone quickly.

GMO is the future and will help save this planet imo. Carbon robotics($$$) are doing some interesting stuff that will also hopefully wean us off the chemical tit so to speak.

I know people don't want to hear this but consuming less dairy/meat will absolutely reduce AG pollution. Trust me, I love the shit too!

@Prawn Connery have you thought about using reflective roof paint to reduce temps?

I'm not sold on the GMO considering mother nature tends to have a lot of answers to man-made problems. But I do agree that livestock farming is damaging. However, we would go along way to reducing the environmental problems of broad-acre farming if we reduced food waste first.

The house I'm in at the moment isn't ideal, but I think we'll be moving soon so that should solve a few problems.

IDK what you want mother nature to do when are soil is becoming barren from chem dependence? Or do you mean " she" wipes us as a species off the planet? Because that would definitely help:-P

Conventional farmers are scared of unconventional methods, shocker. GMO food crops that are mold/pest/drought resistant allows them to farm just like daddy and grandpa taught without excessive chemical use is the future. affordable robotics will help too, automation is already in place in most mega ops.

I'm very small fish and fought upper management hard just to use cover crops on test plots. It reduced our pre/post emergent use. Gave two shits and want the tonnage/acre #s as always. In fairness profit margins are always razor thin and lower yields can end you easily. Mentality and economics (higher priced goods & higher wages for consumers) needs social adaptation .

This can get long , so I'll stop here . Be safe grower.

That is the problem right there. GMO simply allows farmers to continue their unsustainable ways instead of working with nature to prevent salinity, soil errosion, pollution of underground water, whole-sale destruction of natural pollinators and other biodiversity which can actually boost yields etc.

When you have companies like Monsanto breeding GMO crops that are resistant to pesticides and herbicides, what does that tell you?

You are right, this could get long ;-) But I will leave it there because I'm sure you already understand my point.

Ah, of course Monsanto is brought up(terrible pr), two sides to every coin. Golden rice saved millions of children's eye sight in Asia, other positive GMO projects. I'm talking about new generation devoid of any chem use.

In a perfect world I would agree with you, environment at the forefront. Wish I could say the biggest offenders would listen, but time is running out . They will keep chugging along with the same old instead until their hand is forced through laws or land becomes unusable. Let's hope for the former.

Lol, like they had a choice, it's called POVERTY. I was taught as a child to believe in science and still do. I fight anti vaxxers on a weekly basis @ my off season job and it's getting tiring.

You can't push lab created diodes to the public in here and conveniently dismiss gmos. They have their place whether you agree or not.

Poverty? LOL! How much does Golden Rice cost compared to traditional strains? And are you saying poor people can't afford carrots, sweet potatoes or leafy green vegetables that are readily available and already part of all Asian diets?

I lived in Asia for almost two decades. In some parts of China and Korea they mix sweet potato in with rice when they serve it because rice is much more expensive. Root vegetables are cheap. So are leafy greens – especially in tropical and sub-tropical parts of Asia.

Last time I looked, we weren't eating lab-created diodes and they weren't being released into nature to grow by themselves and breed with other strains. I don't think that's a very good argument.

Funnily enough I recently had a conversation with a medical professional who was saying how these pharmaceutical companies are pushing all sorts that can be fixed without side effects by diet and exercise alone. But I feel this has gone way off topic as I am trying to learn how to grow my own medicine more efficiently.

It's all good. A little bit of debate is healthy even if it is off-topic :D I think I agree with you that exercise, relaxation and healthy eating can solve a lot of health issues in modern societies but a lot of people are just looking for a quick and easy fix so that they can keep doing what they are doing. Population pressures are an issue in many parts of the world. And maybe LEDs and food are related after all as indoor growing technology is making up for a lack of agricultural land as people build houses on it. Technology and medicine have their place but we can also learn a lot from Mother Nature.
