Others are gonna stand up and take notice of how useful these things are on a battlefield like Ukraine. The fact that they are going through so many means they are getting a lot of hard use! They are starting to get some of that Russian money now, Canada just gave them over a hundred million of some Russian's cash stash and $10 or $20 million can buy a lot of cheap commercial drones. Cheap Chinese drones equivalent to the Iranian ones the Russians were using are around $10k I believe, electronics could be supplied by the buyer along with the warhead.

Future tanks and APCs may have tethered retractable drones to give them super all round vision and to spot things in the distance, they hover above and keep up on the move coms and power provided by the tether. All tactical commanders love the God's eye view it provides and artillery people like to see where their shells fall. Why send a person to scout ahead or on point when you can use a drone flying at eyeball level with a 4K camera. So expect drones and a lot of them of all descriptions to be on Uncle Sam's shopping list soon.

Thank you for explaining to me..it's more personal than just a Google; also opening up often times to another discussion.

Can the new weapons requested reach Moscow? Perhaps a turd lobbed into Red Square would get Putin's attention?
With climate change, the time between mud seasons has been reduced considerably and this has been a warm winter, despite a recent cold snap. The Russians invaded on Feb 24th and mud season was soon upon them, confining them to roads, that is less than 20 days away. They need several inches of frost in the ground to support a tank and once they start an attack, if it turns warm with rain, they will be screwed with their spearheads cutoff from supply.

“A Russian man who left to fight in Ukraine feels like a sucker”
A military man who retired after the start of the “special operation” talks about the problems he faced in the Russian army and how ready it is for war
Arsalan (name changed for security reasons) is a former soldier from Buryatia. He spent almost ten years as an officer in a combat unit, participated in a “special operation” in Syria for several months. He recently left the army. According to Arsalan, he has long been disillusioned with the Russian army because of the endless corruption, theft and cynicism, and after February 24 the situation became even worse. "Nimage" talked with the former military about the state of the Russian army, what is happening with the morale of the military and why they quit.

In order not to miss the new texts of "Layout", subscribe to our telegram channel
You recently left the service. Did you do it yourself? Was this decision related to the “special operation”?
- No, it was not. I made the decision to leave long before the “special operation” began. But it’s very difficult to quit the army ( it’s rare to terminate a contract of your own free will. Usually, “good reasons” are needed for this. But the list of these reasons is not spelled out in the laws, and the decision is made by the unit commander based on the results of the certification commission . - Approx. ed.). For a year and a half I deliberately violated the disciplinary charter and accumulated reprimands . Then the command presented me to the certification commission, and there they decided to fire me, because I did not hide that I did not want to continue to serve.

At that time, the dismissal of military personnel had not yet become massive, as it is now, so everything went smoothly. True, they told me that now I can’t get a job in many places (for example, in law enforcement agencies). In general, the command was all the same. There are no irreplaceable people in the army.
Why did you want to be in the military in the first place? Did you realize that you might have to kill people?
- When I was at school, in the 10th grade, I and my classmates were registered with the military registration and enlistment office. There, an officer talked to us, who talked about serving in the armed forces. He publicized it well, and I decided to go to a military university. Then I did not have internal contradictions on this score.

I entered there at the age of 17 and immediately signed a contract for the duration of my studies and the next five years after graduation. I liked learning. Military schools and universities are almost like a military unit. There are also weapons, military equipment, outfits, guards. But, in addition to military special, there are ordinary subjects according to the standards of higher education: mathematics, Russian language and others.

I didn't really think about the fact that I would have to kill someone. It seems to me that in everyday life the military and students of military educational institutions do not think about this at all. Even the guys from the special forces and the Airborne Forces hardly often think that they may have to take a person's life.

I don't want to reveal my profession. But I can say that it definitely does not involve killing people. I am not a tanker or an infantryman. My task was not to go forward with firearms and storm territories.
- You say that you wanted to leave long before the "special operation" began. Why?
- As I served, I became more and more disappointed in the army. After participating in the "special operation" in Syria, I realized that I was not ready to serve all my life. This realization came 5-7 years ago.
Why didn't you quit right away or get fired?
“I had to support my family. I held on to this job.
Why are you disappointed in the army? What specific problems led to this?
There are many types of violations in the army. And often they are approved within the system itself. For example, there were often such cases: many tasks descend on the unit commander, he does not have time for anything, and because of this he goes to juggling. A typical case: it is necessary to carry out training firing from a machine gun, a hundred people must shoot from them. But there are no hundred people, they are all busy with something. Therefore, the officer appoints three people who spend the entire pile of cartridges.
The documents note that all one hundred people learned to shoot. In fact, there are only three. This is a failure in military training, a criminal case , a waste of ammunition. But it is unlikely that anyone will bring the commander to justice: everyone knows that he is simply getting out of the situation as best he can.

There are many such stories. The army has a large document flow, everything is strictly regulated. In order to keep the documents in order, the high command and the military personnel sabotage the internal regulations in order to give a beautiful picture and the right numbers in the reports. I began to notice this when I first started serving.

Another systemic violation is the constant extortion from military personnel. In 2012, the Ministry of Defense was headed by Sergei Shoigu, and since then every officer is obliged to build and maintain the infrastructure around him: educational buildings, offices, command posts, headquarters. All this needs to be repaired. At the same time, the Ministry of Defense does not really allocate money for this. You have to make repairs at your own expense or collect them from the military. Sometimes it is possible to sell what is "bad" in the military unit.

Information about fees from military personnel is open, it is even in public. I also donated money. What else to do? It is easier to hand over 200-300 rubles than to go into conflict.

I also observed fraud with medical insurance. Formally, all personnel of the Ministry of Defense are insured under a contract with SOGAZ JSC. But behind the scenes recording injuries in official documents is prohibited . If a soldier is injured, the commanders urge him to be treated at home or in a private clinic, and not through insurance. They say: "If the management finds out, we will all be deprived of the bonus."

It turns out that the injuries received in the army are hidden, and SOGAZ enriches itself, because it receives money for the insurance of soldiers, but does not pay compensation to them.

One of the biggest problems is corruption. I found that even state awards are bought and sold . It does not matter how the soldier showed himself during the fighting. The main thing is whether he managed to negotiate and pay for the order or medal. It happens that one person becomes a hero, and another receives a badge of distinction from the Ministry of Defense. In order to maintain the faith of Russians in the power and invincibility of the Armed Forces, propagandists and officials talk about the exploits of the military, including those that they did not commit. And they are rewarded.
- You yourself were cunning, breaking the rules?
- I tried to be a law-abiding soldier and adhere to at least those rules that relate to something important. Didn't get involved in adventures. But there were, of course, domestic violations. For example, when I needed to be at the workplace, I could attend to personal matters. There were no people who didn't break anything at all.
- You said that you participated in a " special military operation " in Syria. How long were you there? What were your tasks? What did you think about the participation of the Russian army in the conflict?
— I went to Syria for three months. That conflict was in many respects incomparable with what is happening now in Ukraine . The fighting capacity of the Syrian radical groups was low: they had homemade weapons, and instead of military vehicles, Toyota SUVs. From the Russian side, the contingent of the military was also small: mainly private military companies worked.

At that time, to be honest, I didn’t think anything about the conflict itself. He trusted his command, did not ask unnecessary questions and worked conscientiously. The group was small, we had enough of everything. They paid $62 a day.

The locals treated us positively. There was no feeling that we were superfluous there. I have never seen Syrian opponents. We were told that the government of Bashar al-Assad called on the Russian army to help. Only later, a few years later, did I learn that Assad had inherited the presidency, and I realized that his power had weakened so much that he decided to strengthen it with the help of Russia. But at the time, I, like millions of my countrymen, believed what the state media was saying.

- You say that that conflict is incomparable with the Ukrainian “special operation”. Being a military man, did you know that she was preparing? Since when did this become clear?
— Since December. I felt something was wrong when I saw that not only soldiers were sent to the exercises, but also the first persons - the commanders of the districts. Everyone went in that direction - some to Belgorod, some to Rostov-on-Don. But they did not know that they would end up in Ukraine. They realized that they were in a war zone in a foreign country only when they began to shoot at them, and mines began to explode under their feet. All my colleagues who have been there say that they were dragged there by deceit .

However, even if they were told where the “exercises” would end, many would still go. After all, the military command was able to convince many others that the Russian military in Ukraine would be met without resistance.

When it all started, I was shocked. I thought: how can one expect that like this, with a swoop, it will turn out to take a state of forty million? It's impossible.

I myself am not Russian, I am a Buryat. I understand why Ukrainians want to preserve their language, culture, and identity. For them, this war is patriotic , they are highly motivated because they want to remain citizens of Ukraine.

Since the end of February, I could not sleep peacefully. It was hard to watch thousands of soldiers die because of stupid generals who can only threaten their subordinates and lead them to their deaths.
- Did you know something about how the preparations for the "special operation" were carried out?
- Even from social networks it was obvious that everything was organized mediocre. At first it turned out that conscripts were sent there. They also gave interviews while in captivity. Then it became known that in the forefront, riot police went to Ukraine on unarmored vehicles: they had ordinary Urals. What kind of general came up with this?

I believe that the Russian army in its current form is generally not capable of solving tasks of such a high level . Large cash injections are needed so that the military is provided with everything. We also need high morale and a sense of justice among employees. Now an ordinary Russian soldier does not understand what he is fighting for. A Russian man who left to fight in Ukraine feels like a sucker. Not a single official's son went there.

I thought that at least there would be less writing and reports. But in early March, I noticed that there was only more bureaucracy. Instead of wasting time on combat training, the commanders increased the workflow and added the necessary numbers in the reports.

At the beginning of the "special operation" there was a high mortality rate among servicemen from Buryatia. I think this is because the personnel in the Republic are well trained, and our servicemen were among the first to be sent. But they met with strong resistance, and many died.

As for the mortality of volunteers, there are no figures. But in general, the probability of death for them is higher, because they are sent to combat positions that the professional military refused to occupy. And they refused because they had already visited obviously dangerous points due to the unprofessionalism of the commanders. They lost colleagues there and are no longer ready to take risks.

In general, there is a feeling that now the soldiers and officers do not want to go forward, to storm the territories. Therefore, there is no advance of the Russian army. Under fire, it turns out to send mostly volunteers, who, by the way, are also deceived with payments. They tell them: “You are a reservist,” or they “lose” contracts. As a result, no insurance, no salaries.

Ukraine to remove defense minister ahead of expected Russian offensive: lawmaker
Ukraine is set to replace Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov amid a series of corruption scandals, and ahead of an expected Russian offensive, according to a top Ukrainian lawmaker.

“War dictates personnel policy. Time and circumstances call for strengthening and regrouping. This is happening now and will continue to happen in the future,” wrote the Ukrainian Parliament’s majority leader David Arakhamia on Telegram.

Reznikov, who has served as defense minister throughout the war with Russia, will reportedly be replaced with Kyrylo Budanov, the head of Kyiv’s military intelligence agency.

Reznikov will reportedly remain in Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s cabinet as Minister for Strategic Industries, “to strengthen military-industrial cooperation.”
Arakhamia called the changes “absolutely logical” given the two men’s “expertise” as Ukraine ramps up and readies for an expected onslaught of Russian attacks.

A handful of Kyiv officials — including Reznikov’s deputy, Vyacheslav Shapovalov — were ousted from their posts last month in what the government called a push against corruption. The ministry came under scrutiny for allegedly overpaying on food for Ukrainian soldiers.
The deputy denied the accusations but “asked to be fired in order not to create threats to the stable support of the Armed Forces of Ukraine,” according to the ministry.

Reznikov reportedly said he was unaware of his pending dismissal in an interview with Ukrainian outlet Ukraniska Pravda published Sunday.

But earlier in the day, Reznikov said at a Kyiv press conference that “no official remains in office forever” and that he would step down if Zelensky dictated the change.

As the crackdown on corruption continues, Zelensky said last week that the government was “preparing new reforms” for Ukraine that would “change the social, legal and political reality in many ways.”
It isn’t yet clear exactly when the Reznikov-Budanov swap will be implemented — but the Kyiv Independent reports the changes will be enacted quickly.

The war with Russia is just weeks away from its one-year mark, and Reznikov warned last week that Moscow is regrouping up to 500,000 soldiers on the border for a renewed offensive in the coming weeks or month.

Certainly the solution, no one left around..so we must ask ourselves why he hasn't done so already? He could die tomorrow with shit stain legacy.

Where do you think the world learned about drones from? They've been on America's shopping list for a long time.

Well they just got moved up the list and supplies of them will increase, the small commercial ones are very valuable tactically and suffer the highest loses. A military coms package that can be slapped on a commercial drone would be a nice idea and could quickly ramp up supplies fast with mods to commercial equipment. Quad copters started out in the hobby RC world and the first ones were tricopters made of wood. The RC community is global these days and has been for awhile now and most parts come from China. It's safe to say that the development of drones was a global effort and smartphone components helped make it possible in the 2010s, especially for FPV. I remember guys from Sweden years ago making wooden tricopters.

Here are some cheap Chinese FPV drones, attach a bomb and ya got a 300 dollar suicide drone, good out to miles if you set things up right. Not as good as a switchblade, but a lot cheaper and very effective for flying into foxholes and bunkers, even moving vehicles.

I became curious and asked:

Is sharing photographs of prisoners of war banned by the Geneva Convention?
16 MARCH 2022

WHAT WAS CLAIMED
Publishing or sharing identifiable pictures of prisoners of war is a breach of the Geneva Convention.
OUR VERDICT
The relevant Geneva Convention does not explicitly ban the publication of photographs of prisoners of war. Nor does it apply to people who are not involved in the conflict. But the government and British Red Cross say that such pictures should not usually be published.

What a war and what allies! We don't even need to support the Ukrainians that much, compared to our combined military and economic might and no blood, except for Ukrainian blood is spilled on our side and they are giving that willingly for a better future. Vlad is screwed, or will be by summer.

The Baltic nations DESPISE Russia,so much so that an article in the NY Times says the EU (particularly France and Germany) think they are TOO aggressive in this war.It states that Pres. Macron's vision of a autonomous Euro defense force outside the NATO concept has been crushed by this conflict as all European countries have been averse to acting till the US takes the lead. The rebirth of a floundering NATO w/ the US at the tip of the spear has resulted. Good news a strengthened NATO w/a purpose,Bad news, the US can't de-emphasize it's NATO presence in it's pivot to gear up for China's challenges in the Pacific.

A temporary situation, wait until the Russian military is destroyed this summer and attitudes will gradually shift. A strong Ukraine and a liberated Belarus will be at a weakened Russia's throat. If this war did anything, it used up Russia's reserves of ammo, equipment and officers while exposing their weakness. After this the Europeans will be able to handle Russia on their own, nobody fears the bear as they once did. The Russians won't be in a position to attack anybody for a decade and only then if they get out from under sanctions and their war crimes should prevent that until there is regime change. Germany is rebuilding it's military and in a few years the Ukrainian army will be something the Russians will fear. We could see Ukraine allying with a liberated Belarus and Georgia in a defensive alliance with NATO support in a few years, with Ukraine as the main player.

The demise of a aggressive Russia led by a pseudo Czar looking to rectify his perceived slights will be a celebrated result, just hope his nuke orders will be disregarded.
