Sun & Fun in FL

Hey, I live on the 15th floor and I'm able to grow my plant on a balcony, but so far I haven't, for fear that the bright Florida sun would scorch my plants...so basically, I've had 4 plants growing behind lightly tinted glass and they seem to be growing quite nicely, but I just sprouted a 5th plant and I'm considering setting this one outside on the balcony.

I'm just wondering...is there such a thing as TOO much sunlight during the early part of the vegetative stage? I ask this because I know sunlight would reflect off the windows, and the humid air that comes with living on the water amplifies the sunlight, so I'm afraid it might burn the plant.

Thanks in advance!

ur plants will want at least 18 hours of day light. im not sure of the times in florida but i know when i went on holiday there (6 times) it was so god damn hot.

ur plants will like the heat and humidity. the sun wont burn them. u might just have to water them abit more frequently depending on the heat.

good luck!

Don't worry about too much sunlight, the more they get the bigger they will grow, just make sure you keep them well watered, if you have a moisture meter work from that, if not then try watering every time the top 2 inches of soil drys out.

Good luck on the grow!

Thanks for the advice, guys. I was just afraid that the seemingly doubled sunlight might be too harsh on my little baby.

Yup...I'm from Tampa, FL...not as hot as Miami, but not as cold as Jacksonville...it's right in the middle of the state.

Anyway, I've never heard of the Isle of Bali, but nowadays it's called the Ron Jon Resort. Why do you ask?

yeah thats right, ron jon. it used to be called isle of bali then i think they had adverts up advertising it as liki tiki an now ron jon.

i stayed there when we used to go florida every year. my dad owns one of those places. its pretty sweet.

lol Cool. So it's agreed that the regular sunlight PLUS the reflected sunlight won't burn the plants?

You know, I was going to say something about how we should do something next time you come to Florida, but then I thought, "He would probably be too busy doing whatever it is he came to FL to do." lol Shoot me a PM or something next time you come to FL and I'll show you what Florida has to offer. =)

I'm not sure about the Orlando area, but I know Tampa is full of 'shroom fields. You can practically trip balls off the 'shroom fumes that invade your car as you're driving down the country roads.

Of course, but do plants grow under 2 suns all the time? I'd imagine one sun is enough...

Next time you come to FL, I'll take good care of ya. There's plenty of stuff to do that isn't part of the tourist traps. Hotboxing the Porsche is one of them. ;)

The plant will be fine if it starts its life outside. If it's been growing inside and isnt used to the sun it can get sunburnt and die. When moving plants into the sun that aren't used to it you should do it gradually a few hours a day this week, then the next week increase the hours per day.

She's only been above ground since the 20th, and her first day in the sunlight was on 8/23, but she didn't get much time in the sun since it started to rain, and I had just watered. Since then, this has been her schedule.

8am - 7pm -- Sunlight
7pm - 12am -- 2 60w incandescent bulbs (with a fan)
12am - 8am -- 1 32w CFL (with a fan)

So far, she seems to be liking the long days in the sun, but the days are getting shorter by a minute-and-a-half per day. According to www.timeanddate.com, today's "length of day" will be 12 hours, 51 minutes, and in a week (9/1/08) it'll be 12 hours, 41 minutes...so if anything, she's getting less time in the sun each day.

that will make it flower. since the days are getting shorter the plant will put everything it has into flower to try and finish its cycle before the days get too short.

It WOULD make it flower if I were to allow it to see the light of night...or dark of day...you know what I mean.bongsmilie

Like I said...

She's ALWAYS under some sort of a light, so she won't try anything on me, will she?

mmm im not convinced it will grow as well as it would if you just put it under light for 18 hours, for veg you could grow it under the cfl adding the other 2 when it gets bigger. or if you have nice weather put it in the window then top up to 18 hours with the lights. keep ur 6hr night period.

I'm not sure I understood anything other than "keep ur 6hr night period". Can you rephrase that in English, please?

Here's what I think you were trying to say, so correct me if I'm wrong:
I think it would grow better on an 18/6 schedule...or if you have nice weather put it in the sun and compensate with other lights.
Here's the problem...my CFL is a ceiling light in my closet, and my 2 incandescents are ceiling lights in my room.

Why did you use the phrase "top up to 18 hours"? What does "top up" mean?
