If dough is at all an issue I would go for the T5 first as that will keep you going for a while.

Get both .. You know you want to. Many growers (self included) will have both. T5 for cloning and early veg. HPS for the rest.

I would first select a strain that produces 'big' stalks. Theyre not all the same. Then select a single plant from 5 or 6 with a big stalk and take clones. .... Grow them on with the correct ventilation and the use of a fan to gently stress the plant. ..... If youve got those right then I would...

I too use a T5 for Veg only and agree some people DO use them for flower. @silentgrow - They DO NOT kick out much heat, with the aid of a small fan my plants can touch the bulb without burning. T5's come in different size units, you'll need to browse your local supplier to find what you need...

Reconsider using LED's, sorry it has to be said. If low energy is what youre after I recommend using a T5 light unit. If you decide to go with the LED's this is a message from my present self to your future self ..."I told you so".

Make compost tea. Using, compost, worm castings, seaweed/kelp extract, Black mollases and guano's.

To be fair a 'torch' either the naked flame type or bulb type sound very daft. I think the only answer to protect against enviromental issues is to grow at various different site locations and as many plants as possible. When growing outdoors its always a bit hit and miss, depending obviously...

For speed - anything without fruit. Leafy stuff. Spinach is my suggestion
