HLG550 vs Gavita? Anyone with experience with either/both?

You don't want to keep your tent below 80 if you're using white light LEDs. In fact, you want to keep it above 80. This is because LED doesn't put out the infrared light that an HID does, and you want your canopy temps at or slightly above 80 to aid in transpiration.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Too much light.

    New quantum board QB324!

Agreed. If we see new heatsinks (at an affordable price for the average DIYer) that can run these boards at 200w, they will certainly seem more sensibly priced. But even then, that would be for those who want to run them high above the canopy, and honestly, I think it's sort of a step backwards...

    New quantum board QB324!

As I recall, we've been hearing for a while that they had an upcoming board using Nichia diodes. I love HLG as much as the next QB-grower (QBs absolutely fucking rock), but I'm having a hard time believing that the addition of 90 CRI, and more diodes over the same footprint, merits this price...

    DIY with Quantum Boards

@greengrassgrower1 had the same thing happen to one of his. You can see it in the pics on his 'From DEs to LEDs' thread.

What was the wattage discrepancy between your COBs and the DE?

    Intensity

If you're using the right LEDs, they will put out more light per watt than an equivalent wattage of HID.

    Out of box LED lights

225-300w for a 4x4? If he's only using half of it, yes.

    Out of box LED lights

Not saying you're a shill, but just so you know, when someone ends every sentence with an exclamation point, it does look a bit like manufacturer fluff. And I can't understand how anyone could find a colored enclosure more aesthetically pleasing than the unmitigated sexiness of raw components...

Advice please - 12v or 36v led drivers for diy cob build

Are you thinking one of these heatsinks per COB? Haven't run COBs myself, but those look pretty damn beefy. And plenty of surface area to add some far red monos...

    New DIY LED light

Has anyone taken any temp measurements on a bare strip, no heatsink, no aluminum? The application I have in mind would ideally run them bare. I see the eBay seller says no heatsink is required at 1 amp, but it's always good to check on real-world results.

    New DIY LED light

Do you feel they need heatsinking at 1 amp? Looking at possibly grabbing a four-pack of the 56-diode strips from eBay (in 4000k - $20), but I'd like to work out the cooling requirements before I pull the trigger.

Grandmaster Level - HLG Quantum Boards vs 1000w HPS side by side (youtube)

It's more common to run around 30w/sq ft with white light LEDs such as COBs, QBs, and strips. And yes, a very different ball-game. You're quite simply getting more light per watt.

    Mechatronic CoolFin Giga

Yes, I think the SK crew is stuck in a last-generation mentality. You would think it would have occurred to them (especially after viewing the competition) that LEDs offer far more suitable configuration options. However, while I am quite convinced that an equivalent amount of power (applied...

    Mechatronic CoolFin Giga

Completely misses the mark, in my opinion. One of the most important advantages that LED has over HID is that you can spread the light evenly over the entire canopy; the configuration possibilities are legion. Clustering four high-power COBs closely together means that this fixture will need...

First time grow 4 x 8 lighting suggestions

HPS is superior if your budget is limited or if you actually need some more heat in your space. After that, physics steps in and crowns LED. More light per watt, and there's just no way around that.
