You can use less, but will not get the density that you will like, the pic in my avatar is under a 400. It can happen. If you are stuck in a room that is only 4x4, 1000 watts would be a lot and I agree a 600 would be a better choice. But in in my last 4x4 tent I ran a 600 watt light with 240...
