I am pretty sure the 3 way is intended to be like a staged dimmer (hi, med, low setting). You may not be able to get the bulb to its high setting w/ your lamp. Try it out but you may want to move to a single stage - they are more powerful and use same wattage

Goddess - Absolutely the big boys use HPS. T5's are amazing fluoros. And I have to say you have a truely first class setup (one of my favs I have seen so far). It sounds to me like this guy is looking to just get a little experience growing, see if/what he can yield, and hopefully at the end...

Good choice on bulb selection. Heat was never and issue before i added the two 42w in, I think they burn way hotter than the 26w.
