Ok so what's the big dealz with BHO?

I always heat purge my iso, and I do it hot and fast too. I put my glass dish in a huge crock pot full of water on HIGH! I purge 16 oz of iso in 2 to 3 hours and it's ready for harvest. I put it next to a window with a window fan circulation air from in/out over the top of it all. Here's a quick pic of the latest batch:

That looks good Pj the heat /no heat debate rages on... I got my broken up bud & dehydrated ISO in the freezer gonna try a run maybe next week... It so happens I have an old crock pot that I never use as well hmmm Hey so I guess then no moisture gets into the Pyrex that way? I would guess that maybe steam would condense on the glass... Is this an issue?

I use a window AC filter to cover my dish. It seems to keep it clean. I've read about people using a bandana, I have considered covering it with my silk screen I use for dry sieving hash. But the AC filter works well, and obviously I avoid getting any loose dirt or dust in the air above it. If you have the dehumidifier around I gotta suggest trying it. The warm air gives just the tiniest bit of heat to help the evap without destroying all the terpenes, and the moving air speeds the evap I believe as well. I usually rotate the dish once durring the process when 98% of the liquid is gone already.

I got a sticky pen wax burner a few weeks back. Its cool, I like being able to use it out in public without anyone really even giving me a second look. I was walking into the grocery store the other day hitting it :). I have been vapeing that delicious shatter in her, I find I can make a little worm or stick with the shatter, and just set it in the chamber. If it gets stuck, just push it down alittle and your good to go again.
Yeah my dehumidifier has the exhaust coming from the top unlike yours but I think I can use a rack over it to evap. It is maybe 80 degree air that shoots out when it warms up. I have some filtering mesh that might work well to keep our dust. I love my vape pen it works better than expected but yeah seems like you gotta push your material down to the heat coil to finish what's in the chamber sometimes. More like smoke than vapor though it's perfect fur on the go. Looks like I'll be trying a couple different ways til I get my own tech down, just like everything else I've done DIY cannabis related so far.

Thanks. I like to think I make an above average iso based wax. With the fan blowing over there's never any time for any moisture to condensate, so it's never been an issue. Funny thing is that batch in the pic, I totally fell asleep while it was evaping, so instead of being over heat for the typical 2 or 3 hours it was heated for over 6 hours (a few hours even after it was fully evaped). Then I heat again when I scrape by putting my glass pan in another metal pan on top of the stove with the eater at a low boil. The goo gets soft and easier for me to collect. Then once it's all collected I throw it in the middle of the hot glass again and stir/whip it up a bit. My buddy who deals a bit of bho seems to like my oil better than the stuff he moves. It is true that heating/whipping can change color and texture, but I've never had any oil come out that dark with my methods, and lighter color doesn't necessarily = better. I can get a clearer color if I don't whip, but I like the end product much better if I do.

Twitch I think I'm beginning to understand that whether you use heat or not you can still end up with smokable product but the temp of your purge determines the finish along with strain characteristics & other factors. Just like BHO where higher temps make budder & lower temps make shatter...taking into account the lower boiling point of ISO I would guess that purge temps are lower but the type of oil desired can be made by adding/removing heat... Any of this make sense?

It's highly strain dependant as well.

sir dabs... how are you able to increase your hoot size with 3 hits?

I find after the first one im hurtin, and the 2nd needs to be even smaller, same with the 3rd... if I made them bigger I would be coughig blood. unless your first hit is a puny puny one... bit I start with a big one then need to work my way down.

dude after i read your post about getting a nail too hot i stepped it back on the heat and my dabs are smoother :fire:

My lungs can't handle anything but bho unfortunately. I smoked flower and bubble for ever, but awhile ago I had to move to vaping per doctors request. I hate not being able to smoke so I do the nail and bho and love it. Still get to use my glass pieces instead of my volcano and I don't kill my lungs, that's my big deal about bho. I prefer a cooler nail hit than red hot also.

Mine actually vents out the top as well man. I set my dish with just about 1/4 of the exhaust vent covered, and place a piece of foam under the dish to keep it lvl on the top of the unit.

Thanks so much for sharing your expertise everyone! I think I just made some ISO honey but it doesn't look like I expected. My dehumidifier blows air out of the top so I planned to use a rack for evap but that didn't work out so I just put it directly on top of the unit. Its about 90 degree air coming out so pyrex got a little warm; ISO was gone in 6 hours. Left it on there for 18 hours but I think that was too long. I got some gold flaky shatter when I scraped the top portion of my pyrex but on the bottom was a sticky mass of gooey "carmel." Scraped it all up in a pile and rolled between parchment while it was still a little warm, folded it over a couple times & pressed it out flat. It now looks and feels like tacky caramel but before I scraped it was a nice gold color. It then turned amber as I collected it all together. Is it "done" yet? I thought it would be hard like shatter or more oily like honey oil...was it too much/not enough heat? If I heat it up a bit to make it gooey again will that help to clarify it? ...do I just need to leave it alone for longer at room temp? is it ok the way it is to do dabs?
Already tried vaping the gold shatter in a v2 pen & it worked good but now the remaining shit is all tacky & pliable after evap for 24 hrs...will it stay this way? Should I put it in a jar??

Think you are right, Giuz. I just left it out on the parchment overnight and now it is starting to get hard...i chipped off a tiny piece with my dabber & crowned it on my breakfast bongload & it melted into oblivion...mmm not bad! I dont care if its totally clear; it was transparent before I scraped it all up though now its opaque. I bet if I heated it up enough it would clarify but fuck it I got what I got....seems to work & taste pretty good. Is it possible it came out like this because I didnt bother to try and dry the cured bud out further? Thought there might be too much moisture left in them as they were only cured for a couple weeks....thought about baking remaining water out of the material before freezing but never did it.

I prefer fresh frozen........your supposed to purge in a thin film to properly remove the iso/butane or even water......it doesn't look too bad though, id smoke it man

I think it looks great for a first try!! More clearity will come with practice, and refinement. I've been working with fresh frozen, more and more as well.

If it dabs clean and doesn't splatter or anything your good to go though IMO. I've had batchs that stayed a little more like a taffy, and I had once batch that stayed about the consistancy of room temp butter. Personally I'd give it the full 24 hrs to dry next time and see if it makes a difference. Setting the dish right on top of the dehumidifier like you did is exactly how I do it though.

My oil is clear before I whip it, but when I whip it it becomes opaque. Clarity is only for looks. My whipped shatter is opaque and better than when its clear IMO. Yes it still shatters in even warm temps.
