I decided against cracking wise in response. I note that some folks hold to "all life is precious" as a moral principle. The doctrine and practices of India's Jain religion show this idea taken to a practical extreme. I choose otherwise. I don't hold with the idea that killing another life form is inherently evil. i am an unrepentant carnivore, for example.
that does not mean that i enjoy or condone making any critter suffer. cn

Im sorry but piling rocks or throwing blankets over the hole wont do anything. It obviously likes it under the deck and will only dig another hole. Unless the op wants to trap and relocate it ( which can in fact be easily done without being sprayed) then the thing must die. Fuck a red ryder. A high power pellet gun will kill it quickly and painlessly.

Plug the hole at night (make sure you use something dark) place a trap on top of where the hole is... Wait for it to come back and scare the shit out if him right into the cage. Im assuming it would run to where the hole was. Just an idea.
if all else fails pour gasoline in to the hole and toss in a match!

with a decent pellet gun I dropped a stray dog from around 80 feet. Lucky shot since the pellet hit right between the eyes and penetrated the skull. Must have found a soft spot.

no, this was on a farm and the stray dogs are skanky, probably rabid and destroy crops and equipment.

I have the cureall for any vermin that try to occupy the wrong place. It is totally suppressed and works without fail on anything up to coyote sized game. Quiet and lethal.

Buy a raccoon trap from the feed store/tractor supply, put it inside a large trash bag so that just the entrance to the trap is exposed. Then bait it with cat food and wait.
You won't get sprayed with the trash bag covering 90% of the trap if you hold it right. I've had to do this a few times and I've never been sprayed.

been sprayed twice, most god awful smell there is. more of a chemical smell then putrid. to this day i still can't drink tomato juice.

go and get some critter ridder, you can find it at any hardware store or even at target... and it actually works...
if you can find the granular stuff rather than the spray you'll be better off....
that stuff is like tear gas...
the idea of waiting for it to exit (at night) and covering the hole, is a good idea but if you have multiple and they don't all come out... well you get the picture.
You can call pest control and have them come out but yes they will have to kill it as well as it is not legal to relocate pest... at least not in Ca.
