Big Bud Grow Op

OK, here's the sit rep: yesterday I had this feeling that the water I was putting on them was WAY too acidic. It was almost as if the air was caustic. I'm not much of a pot grower but I have worked with very powerful acids and I know that elements can exist as not only a liquid but also a gas or solid. That said, I because very suspicious of the aforementioned P.O.S. six in one pH meter that I bought from Stealth Hydro. The plants were getting worse and worse by the hour and some of the leaf tips had literally burned totally off. With nothing left to lose, I grabbed my babies, removed the black rubber grommets and the mylar covers and hosed them down in the sink (yes tap water!) for about a minute each and let as much as possible run out. I covered them back up and put them back under the lights, kissed them good night and left. I came in this morning and they were looking better, not any worse for sure. I'm pretty sure the one that was all crinkled up is done but it has been on it's way out since Monday anyway. I'm sure it was a male :). I went to the pool supply and got a pH kit, brought it back only to find that it went down to 6.8. I took it back and went to the pet store and bought one that goes down to 5.2. I'm about to mix up some rain water with a *little* pH down, some nutes and a drop or two of Super Thrive. I just gotta go with my gut on this one.
Pot I also bought that POS meter. RETURN IT!! I got refunded. Go out and buy a Milwaukee pH/EC meter or Blue Lab....they're well worth the money...if that's too much, i'd go on Ebay and buy 2 separate pH/EC meters which are in 30-40$ range. Don't rely on strips or that colored water crap....wildly inaccurate.

I sent them an email asking for a refund; we'll see what they say. I'm not opposed to paying good money for a good meter; I just hate throwing away $150 for a P.O.S. I'm just doing the best that I can for now; the plants are obviously very acid burned. I'm still having a hell of a time getting water in the right range. The only brand that the hydro store sold was "Viagrow"; it's liquid and in a quart bottle. If anyone has any experience with this product as to how much in a gallon of water you normally should need, I sure would appreciate hearing about it. I don't know it we're talking a few drops or three cupfuls so anything in the ballpark would be nice to know.

Stardate 1616v2: After pissing away half a day today trying my best to get some 5.5 pH water, I decided "fuck it" and got it as close to the ballpark as I could, added some Super Thrive and Nutes. I took pix - mostly for reference for myself - but if it helps anyone else that would be even better - I have more seeds and more on the way. I should know by Monday if they are dead or thriving.

Just a suggestion...For your next seedlings, start
them, and keep them in smaller cubes, and let the
roots thrive before transplanting them.
I would get rid of those reflectors and plug
covers until they are well established...than you will
know just how well they are being watered.

When I transplanted them they had tap roots coming out the bottom of the RW. The mylar and covers are there to keep the light from getting to the RW and algae forming. I'm not misting at all. This morning it looks like the damage has at least stopped. It would be foolish to think I would see an actual improvement this quick but at least it isn't getting worse by the hour like it was before.

Stardate 1818.1: All the TLC looks like it's working. I dumped the excess water and re-watered with the nutes and Super Thrive. I took pix but wanted to compare them to the ones I took day before yesterday. I'm posting them but I gotta tell ya, they are looking MUCH improved. Only the one died and it was on it's last leg from blowing in the fan anyway. That fan idea really blows! The new growing is coming out fast and looking very healthy. I can tell they are a bit stunted and that sucks big time but at least they are going to make it. Tough little bitches. :)
The column on the left was taken on the 16th day; the column on the right was taken today, two days later.

Well folks, the babies are not only surviving but thriving! Somehow, in my gut, I knew the problem with my plants. The meter was obviously WAY off and I still don't have a meter yet but things are back on track and the plants are back to normal and growing like mad. I have a new pH meter on the way, a Hanna pHep4, digital pH/temp waterproof meter so things are only going to get better. I can hardly believe the new growth on these! Without further ado, here are the newest pix, day 20 since the first sprout appeared:

Stardate 2727v1.0: I came in this morning after being gone over the weekend. I wasn't prepared for what I found; my little baby plants had turned into bushes! They grow up so quickly don't they? :) There is hardly any evidence of the pH burn from two weeks ago that nearly killed them all. Although I am down to 4 plants, the 4 are doing soooo well. The leaves are a nice, lush green and the roots are coming out the bottom of the RW. I'll be adding more nutes this morning and putting them on another RW cube. NGT, I would add my nutes then check the pH but I'm having the worst luck on my pH meters. The first one was a POS; the brand new Hanna that came in Saturday won't turn on. I guess I'll just sort of wing it; that's been working pretty well so far. Here's the pix.

The hanna one won't turn on, is there anything in the instructions on what you have to do to start, has it got batteries?

They are 27 days since the first seed leaves appeared. When I do the "stardate..." it's the number of days old they are. I did trim off (after taking the pix) a few leaves (branches) that were still damaged from the acid. I got the other RW cube taped to the bottom on the other RW cube and I had bought some panda film covers to replace the mylar and rubber grommets. They do just bush out like that. I think I'm going to start the flowering at the end of this week; they will be 4 weeks old on Wednesday. I've got them under CFL's now but I'll be rigging up my HPS for the flowering. I think they about to really take off. BTW, I had them in the grow cabinet with no fan and the CO2 boost bucket running the whole time. I think that def made a difference.

The Hanna has batteries; I called tech support and the rep told me to press the on button really hard but that didn't make any difference. I sent the dealer an email telling them that I wanted a working one. Stuff happens.

I have the HI 98127. Here is the url for the manual but I have the manual. It came with 4 hearing aid batteries in it. I have no way to test them.
