3~7days. Your method is the most natural method. It's harmful for your roots to be every exposed to any light. I have the lights on because it keeps my box warm, but if you can control temperatures you don't really need any light. I also like to have the lights on when the first leaves show up...

if you spray your plants with ferts/nutes and have your lights too close to your plants it will produce the burn spots you observe there. move your lights away..

I think you could squeeze 5~6 5gal pots in there but more lights would be better in this case. Though I have no experience in hydro, wouldn't soil be cheaper because you don't have to buy pumps and all? I don't really know anything in that area. anyways, sounds like a plan for you

fox farm reigns over all. Grow Big Big Bloom Tiger Bloom safe/easy to use. also i find that the solution's pH is already balanced so I don't really have to adjust it
